THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY, February 19, 2009

As I looked at my shirt, I said, "Look how dirty this is."

My friend, Lynette assured me, "It only shows you how much fun you had with your kids today!"

It's the quote on my home page-but it should be paid more attention to- because it tells us to not take everything too seriously.

Things, events (especially involving kids) are not always going to go as planned. You have to learn to accept it and even enjoy it...

which reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: "A truly happy person can enjoy the scenery on a detour."

SKID MARKS

I'm usually quite diligent when it comes to laundry-specifically-making sure the socks aren't all balled up before going in the washer, checking clothes for stains, etc.

Well, apparently while in a rush to wash a load of clothes last night, I missed a rogue turd that must have been hiding in a pair of my son's underwear. It was a sly nugget too-as I missed it going in the washer and the dryer.

It wasn't until the dryer buzzer sounded that I discovered the evidence left by the sneaky piece of poo-evidence in the form of skid marks which soiled the white drum roller of the dryer. Oh, and the stench!

I'm grateful for Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and Lysol.

You don't want to know about the lint trap...

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY- February 12, 2009

"Children are born from us; they are not owned by us. They are not possessions. The fact that they are little does not mean they are less. They are free spirits for us to love and enjoy. For all of us, children can be a beautiful experience ... doorways into our own humanity."

-from Barry Neil Kaufman's book Giant Steps (he's also the founder of the Option Institute)

Crafty Crown Royal

My daughter needed a shoebox to make a Valentine's Day Card Box for her class...

I was shoeboxless-so I turned to the liquor cabinet...

My daughter loved the royal purple box and enjoyed decorating it. (I wonder if the teacher will think I'm a drunk...)

(My daughter used textured scissors to cut out the heart shapes. She also used stickers, pipe cleaners, ribbon, stamps and markers. The decorations were attached with double-sided tape and a glue stick)

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY, FEB. 5, 2009

"If there is anything that we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could better be changed in ourselves."

~C.G. Jung, Integration of the Personality, 1939

My daughter has been "acting up" lately and I've wondered how I could change her behavior. I've realized, I need to change my parenting-to be more adaptive. As she learns her boundaries and tests them, I have to rethink my parenting.

I'll continue to give her choices (though she may not like either of them-i.e. "clean your room or go to bed")

But, I can no longer give her second chances...

And, I have to follow through with consequences...
